According to the timeline that we put in our Shark Tank presentation, we had until the 20th of April to fully design the track layout, build the base for the track, and obtain some of the other materials that are needed for this project which we have accomplished. Recently, we went to TAP Plastics to buy acrylic and other materials to establish the base for the track. Our group also talked to the people at TAP Plastics to cut the acrylic base out so we can insert the magnets into the slots. Our group has also researched on other stores to acquire the superconductor from. This is all to meet our last timeline goal to Build the Magnetic Track and test the superconductor. Overall, our group is making good progress for the June 1st deadline.

According to our timeline we have until the 20th of April to fully design the track layout, build the base for the track, and obtain some of the other materials that are needed for this project. For track construction, we worked on building built the base and outlined the area we intend to place the magnets. Most of the track is going to be made out of wood, with the exception of the piece of acrylic that is going to hold the magnets. This is the final design we chose, mostly due to the cost of a complete acrylic construction. We purchased the BCC4 magnets from K & J Magnetics. Unfortunately we purchased the wrong dimension magnets first, but corrected it based off the model we made in inventor. The next step in making our superconductor track is to send the specifications for the acrylic circle to TAP Plastics so they can cut it for us. The specifications will also include all of the magnet cutouts. After assembling all of the pieces together, we will be on our final, most difficult step; making the actual superconductor. We will wait until our next blog to go into more detail about the superconductor and the building process. Overall, we have made fairly good progress and the project looks to be successful so far.
Our timeline goal had us doing research until the 16th of March. As of now, that has been going quite well and we are ahead of schedule. We have located a source for the magnets, places to acquire the materials and the prices for the superconductor, and have also done some delving into the processes required to make the superconductor. In order to make the superconductor, we also needed to talk to several teachers around Northgate.
We talked to Mr. Penovich, Mrs. Fernandez, Mr. Taylor and Ms. Kjonaas about using the pottery kilns and getting liquid N2. The materials we will need are Yttrium Oxide, Barium Carbonate, and Cupric Oxide. These materials will need to be heated to around 950°C for eighteen to twenty four hours. The end product will be a superconductor, that when coated in liquid nitrogen, should levitate above the magnetic track. In addition to this, we have created a ~19:50 scale model of our proposed design to aid in visualization. It has prevented us from making a counting error and the visualization has helped us narrow down the materials we will use for the base. If our current progress continues, we will remain ahead of schedule and soon have a built track. Drew, Garrett, and I have started on our NGMaglev Genius Hour Project. The NGMaglev project's final design is a Superconductor Maglev Track with a Superconductor "train". We have started to research what materials we need to build this maglev track and what we need to make the superconductor. We have made a shared google folder to share all this information among ourselves.
During the 1st Quarter of the 2017-2018 school year, we have worked on a variety of things in Help Desk. I have helped teachers with various tasks including making a screencast for PD Day which is a training day for Northgate High school staff, I made a video on how to share a folder on Google Drive. Another thing I have done was to move all the information the Academic Counselors had on the old Northgate website and move it onto their new website and update the information. A major thing I did was to help start up Video Club with Mr. Bauleke where we make informational PSAs for the school. We are currently filming our first video. I also helped jazz up the World Languages website with Garrett Smith and reformat it and also change it from Foreign Languages to World Languages. The first assignment we did was about Teens on the Internet and how social media is effecting the teens of this generation and maybe future generations. Cyber bullying is not a joke, just cause it is not face to face, you can still deeply effect the person on the other end. |
